The military has recently carried out a coup to topple the democratically elected government in Gabon, the latest African nation to do so.

According to Within Naija, the Gabonese President, Ali Bongo, was removed by the military on Wednesday 30th August 2023, days after winning the presidential election in the country.

The BBC reports that soldiers appeared on Gabonese national television to announce their takeover of the country.

The coupists also reported the abrogation of Saturday’s political decision and the dissolution of the democratic institutions in the country.

Talking on Gabon 1 and Gabon 24, the spokesman of the coupist said he was speaking on behalf of the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions”.

Following the recent military coup in the West African nation of Niger Republic, in which President Mohammed Bazoum was removed from power, the development in Gabon comes at a time when the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and other international organizations as well as countries are making efforts to restore democratic rule in the country.

Altogether, seven African nations are currently under military rule following a coup in those countries.
